Led by two of the program's all-time winningest wrestlers, seniors Jack Maida and Mike McGhee, the Blue Devils have a pretty even mix of solid veterans, sprinkled up and down the lineup, and promising newcomers.
Projected at 132, senior Jack Maida, who will continue his career at American University next season, has racked up 120 wins in his first three seasons. He is a 3-time State Qualifier, and placed 6th in NJ in 2019. Along with fellow senior, Brendan Nichols, who placed 3rd at Districts in 2020, they will anchor the lowerweights that should feature some new faces to the lineup.
There is good experience returning in the middle, as well. Senior Mike McGhee has 115 career wins, is a 2-time District Champ, a returning Region Champ, and a 2-time State Qualifier. Joining McGhee are the junior pair of Gabe Scalise and Jake Hershenfeld. Scalise, who won 29 matches last season, was a District runner-up in 2019, while Hershenfeld is coming off a 21-win sophomore campaign.
The upperweights get a huge lift this season as junior Jamie Mazzacco returns to the lineup after missing 2020 due to injury. Mazzacco had a standout rookie campaign for Shore in 2019, picking up 30 wins, and placing 2nd at Districts. His return gives the Blue Devils a hammer up top, to be joined by seniors Cade Torres, who finished 3rd at Districts in 2020, and Dylan Drahos. A trio of experienced juniors are also back up top in Layne Raposo, Harry Sleavin, and Hunter DeMarzo.
There are some standout seniors here looking for one more big run in the postseason, as well as taking a shot at the B-Central Title, in which you figure Pt Beach to be the main opposition. The two teams will waste no time banging heads, as they open the season with each other on March 17th, at Beach. While the seniors look for a big career capper, there will also be a focus on developing the youngsters joining the lineup as the Blue Devils look the keep things rolling as usual.
