2019 Season Preview
Some big time returners, strong newcomers, and good overall numbers, gives Shore Regional the type of overall talent and depth that has them poised for a big year in West Long Branch.
Down low, Jack Maida (39-6 / 2nd D24 / 4th R6), a State qualifier last season, is back, giving the Blue Devils one of the top 106-pounders the Shore. There is some good depth behind him, giving head coach Dave Porta the luxury of bumping up Maida if needed in duals. At 113, is senior Matt Klemser, a 30-bout winner, giving Shore a great 1-2 punch at 6/13. Junior Ross Dougherty (9-7) saw plenty of action in the lineup last season, and has put the work in to have a big season. Expect to see some new faces in the lineup around 120-132, including freshmen Gabe Scalise and Andrew Decker, and senior Cody Joyce.
The teeth of the lineup could be in the run from 138-170. Al DeSantis (38-8 / 1st D24 / 3rd R6) is another returning State qualifier and kicks things off here. At 145, Mike McGhee (33-9 / 2nd D24) is coming off an outstanding rookie season. At 152, senior Ian Smith (21-6) was a 20+ bout winner wrestling up at 160 last season. At 160, Jack McCrae, a 28-match winner and District medal winner in 2017, returns after missing last season due to injury. Freshman Jamie Mazzacco was a State placer in Intermediate States last season, and is capable of big things for Shore at 170. There's some good depth behind these names, as well, giving the lineup some flexibility.
In the upperweights, Cade Torres (18-16) returns after a nice freshman season in the lineup. Shore also returns starters Joe Graci at heavyweight and 23-bout winner Taylor Sousa, who was a District runner-up in 2018, his first year in wrestling. With the full year under his belt, he could be due for a big season.
Shore has had some good individual wrestlers over the years, but they've never had this many, all at once, with the type of depth they have around them. This has the makings of what could be the best lineup they ever had. As a result, look for the rivalry between the Blue Devils and the Garnet Gulls of Pt Beach to really heat up this year as they both contend for the B-Central and CJG1 Titles. Really, a nice lineup here capable of some big things.
