A young team with a load of talent and potential, the Blue Devils are a rising team to keep an eye on in 2018. And while they are young, there's just a handful of seniors, they do return a very strong group of starters, including six wrestlers with at least 24 wins a season ago.
Down low, the expectations are very high. Al DeSantis is coming off a rookie campaign that saw him win 39 mantches and become Shore's first State qualifier since 2011. With a full year of varsity experience under his belt, he'll be aiming for even bigger things this season. He's joined down low by fellow returning starters Matt Klemser, a District runner-up, 27-bout winner Brad Smuro, and sophomore Ross Dougherty. Also down here for Shore is Jack Maida, an extremely talented frosh that will look to make an immediate impact.
The stretch of the lineup from 138-160 has the chance to be quite solid as well. Three starters are back in juniors Ian Smith and Jack McCrae, a Region qualifier that won 28 bouts a season ago, and senior Jarrett Weir, who has put in the work this offseason as he looks to cap his career with a big senior season. Shore has some more frosh that will contribute in this stretch, including Mike McGhee, who comes in off a very strong intermediate career.
Up top, there will be some work to do as there are a lot of new faces. The Blue Devils do have a proven commodity up here though in Mike Rosati, a 24-bout winner in 2017, that will be looked to provide veteran leadership to a group that will be featuring a lot of new faces.
From 106-160, things look pretty clear. That is a very strong group for Shore. The key will be how the upperweights fare. Looking at the schedule, Shore has some tough matchups early on with teams like Brick Memorial, Pt Boro, and Ocean. Matches like those, and a full month of the regular season schedule to break the new faces in, can only help prepare them for their big divisional matchup at Pt. Beach on January 17th. And with the way things look early on, it may be Beach again that Shore has to go through in February for a Sectional title bid, as Manville, who knocked them out last season, has been moved out of the Section. Individually, Shore had four Region qualifiers in 2017 and finished 5th in the District. They have a very good shot at topping both of those numbers this season, as well as having a nice showing in the SCT this season.
