2017 Season Preview
The graduation gremlin hit the Blue Devils hard in 2016, with 6 wrestlers with 20+ wins departed. Still, Shore, who has been one of the traditionally strong schools in the Shore Conference, has a nice nucleus returning to build around as they break in several new starters and look to continue their winning ways.
The good news on the partial rebuild of the lineup is that Shore's returning starters are spread out throughout the lineup. Down low is a pair of returning 20+ match winners in junior Brad Smuro, who placed 3rd in the Districts, and Matt Klemser, a 24-bout winner as a frosh. They'll provide experience in the lower portion of the lineup for the newcomers that include promising freshmen Al DeSantis and Tanner Smuro.
In the middle, Shore has Jack McRae, a sophomore that won 16 matches in his rookie season, and junior Jarret Weir returning.
There will be several fresh faces in the upper portion of the lineup, but head coach Dave Porta has a strong core to break them in around with the returning Austin Cannon, Mike Rosati, and Joe Aria, a very solid trio. Cannon, who did not wrestle in the post-season, was undefeated last season and has all the potential to be a guy who can reach the podium in AC. Aria picked up 16 wins as a frosh wrestling at 220/Hwt, which is no easy task. He can be a 20+ winner and a guy who can also make some noise in the post-season.
With the losses to graduation, there is some lineup work to be done. The good news is that the schedule is set up pretty well for them as they try and defend their B-Central title. Pt Beach figures to be the team to beat for that crown, but Shore won't have to face them until mid-January. In the meantime, the newcomers will get in their varsity experience in both manageable matchups, and some stiff tests against Pt. Boro and Ocean Township, among others.
Individually, there are several grapplers here capable making strong runs in the post-season. I mentioned Cannon and Aria, but add Klemser, Smuro, and McCrae into that mix, as well. The Districts will be interesting as Shore benefits from getting away from the Bricks, Wall, and Beach, and joins a District where the two traditionally tough programs, Ocean & CBA, are both rebuilding. If things break right, there could be several Blue Devils wrestling deep into February, and possibly into March.
